Over the top: what causes it and how to fix it
Over the top is the most common fault in amateur golf, and the most commonly misdiagnosed. The move you can see is usually not the move that caused it.
Over the top means the upper body starts the downswing, throwing the hands and club outward so the club approaches the ball from outside the target line. It produces a pull when the face is square to the target and a slice when the face is open to the swing path. The cause is usually a sequencing problem, and often an inside takeaway earlier in the swing.
What the move actually is
In a well-sequenced downswing the lower body starts first. The hips begin rotating while the arms and club are still finishing the backswing, which drops the club onto a shallower path and lets it approach the ball from slightly inside the target line.
Over the top reverses that order. The shoulders and arms fire first. The club is thrown out and away from the body, crosses the target line, and comes down from outside. Seen from behind, the club goes over the plane it went up on — which is where the phrase comes from.
How to know if you do it
Film one swing from directly behind, on the ball-to-target line. Find the frame in the downswing where your lead arm is parallel to the ground, and compare where the shaft points to where it pointed at the same height going back.
If the shaft on the way down sits noticeably outside — closer to the ball, further from your body — than it did on the way up, that is over the top. This is a measurement a rear-view camera reads unusually well, which is why it is the most heavily weighted thing an app can check.
The tell without video: divots that point left of target for a right-handed player, and a ball that starts left. If your divots aim left and the ball curves right, you have both halves of the pattern.
Why it makes you slice
Two separate things determine where the ball goes. The clubface angle largely controls the direction the ball starts. The relationship between face and path controls how much it curves. Coaches shorten this to: the face sends it, the path bends it.
For a driver, face angle accounts for roughly 85% of the launch direction and path about 15%; with irons it is closer to 75/25. So an out-to-in path on its own does not produce a slice. It produces:
- A pull if the face is square to the target — ball starts left and stays left.
- A slice if the face is open relative to that out-to-in path — ball starts left of the path and curves hard right.
- A pull-hook if the face is closed to the path — the rarer, uglier version.
This is why "fix your slice" advice so often fails. If you shallow the path but leave the face wide open, you have converted a slice into a push-slice, not solved it. The path and the face are separate problems that happen to arrive together.
What actually causes it
The over-the-top move is usually a symptom. Common upstream causes:
- An inside takeaway. The club gets sucked behind your hands early. From there the only way back to the ball is to reroute over the top. This is the most common chain, and it means the fault you feel at the top started in the first half-metre.
- Hands not deep enough at the top. Arms lifted instead of the body turning, so the club is steep before the downswing even starts.
- A setup that is too upright. Insufficient forward bend leaves no room for the arms to swing down in front of the body, so they go out instead.
- Hitting from the top. The instinct to add speed with the shoulders and arms, which are the muscles that feel powerful, rather than with the ground and the hips, which are the ones that actually are.
- Limited thoracic mobility. If your upper back does not rotate well, you will substitute arm lift for turn, and arrive steep.
Drills that change the sequence
Position drills fix positions. Over the top is a sequencing problem, so the drills that work are the ones that change the order of the motion rather than giving you another static shape to hold.
The pump drill
Swing to the top, then pump the club down to lead-arm-parallel and back up twice without hitting anything, feeling the hands drop while the shoulders stay closed. Hit on the third one. You are rehearsing the feeling of the club falling before the body turns through.
Step-change drill
Start with your feet together. Swing to the top, and as you begin down, step your lead foot into its normal position. Because the step has to happen before you can hit anything, the lower body is forced to start the downswing. This one fixes sequencing faster than almost anything else.
Side-arm throw
Put the club down. Throw a ball side-arm, at about waist height, toward your target. Nobody throws over the top — the body naturally sequences from the ground up when it is trying to generate speed with a throw. That is the feeling you want back in the swing.
Split-hand shallowing
Grip with your hands a few inches apart and make slow swings. The split grip makes an over-the-top move feel awkward and a shallowing move feel natural, which turns the correction into feedback rather than instruction.
Checking that it actually changed
The problem with feel-based fixes is that a large change in feel is often a small change in fact. A move that feels like you are swinging absurdly far from the inside is frequently just neutral on camera.
So measure it. Film the same swing from the same position before and after, and look at the shaft position at lead-arm-parallel on the way down. If the number moved, the swing moved. If it did not, the feeling was lying to you — which is normal, and exactly why video is worth the two minutes it costs.
